HEALTH PROMOTION

The Health Education/Health Promotion Program in the Carteret County Health Department provides health information to our patients and the public at large. The program also promotes change in policies and the environment that will encourage local citizens to make healthier lifestyle choices. Policy and environmental changes mainly focus on ways to increase physical activity, improve nutrition, and encourage smoking prevention and cessation.

Some examples of how our Health Education/Health Promotion Program has been at work in Carteret County:

FOLIC ACID EDUCATION is offered to groups and individuals with materials
provided by the NC Folic Acid Council (web-site: www.getfolic.com). The goal
of this program is to encourage all women of child bearing age to take a daily
multi-vitamin containing 400mcg of folic acid as a way to prevent certain birth
defects, and to enhance over-all health.

"TAKE 10!" is a K-5 classroom based physical activity program that gives
elementary school teachers ways to include physical activity in their regular
lesson plans. White Oak Elementary School and Beaufort Elementary School
are two pilot programs using the “TAKE 10!” approach. Other schools that are
interested can contact 728-8550 on how to get started.

WINNERS CIRCLE: The Winner’s Circle Healthy Dining Program is designed to
help you identify foods that are both nutritious and delicious when eating away
from home. The statewide program applauds restaurants, schools and other
establishments. To learn more go to      http://www.eatsmartmovemorenc.com/programs.htm. We want to encourage
consumers to seek out WINNER’S CIRCLE establishments and any interested
     venues contact: 728-8550 ( Winner’s Circle nutritional criteria )

CHILD SAFETY SEAT INFORMATION is available at Carteret County Health
Department. Also, on staff is a certified child safety technician who works with
Buckle Up and Safe Kids Coalition to do child safety seat check-up events.
Although most people with small children have safety seats, it is estimated that
4 out of 5 seats are installed improperly! Call the Health Department at
728-8550 to find out where you can have your seat inspected, and about the
child restraint laws in North Carolina. A good web-site to check out is
     www.buckleupnc.org.

COLLABORATION WITH OTHER COMMUNITY AGENCIES AND GROUPS takes place
on a continuous basis. Our Health Education staff actively works to promote the
annual Senior Games Health and Fitness Fair events, and partners with area
agencies to promote health and wellness for county citizens.

PUBLIC PRESENTATIONS on a variety of health topics are also offered by the
Health Education/Health Promotion Department. Please call 728-8550 to make
     arrangements.

What does the Public Information Department Do?

In cooperation with Time Warner Cable TV-10 in Newport, our Health
Department produces a monthly public service television show called
“Lookout for Your Health,” dealing with an array of health issues and topics.
Shows are broadcast twice per week, usually Monday and Thursday evenings.
This is the only Time Warner studio in eastern North Carolina, so we are
fortunate to have this outlet to get important health information out to the
     public.

The Public Information Department works closely with all the media outlets in
the county, sending out news releases, feature stories, and acting as a contact
person for the press, TV and radio stations in the area.

Staff provides and develops public health brochures, flyers and posters for
     distribution in the community.
