The program strives to produce short-term and long-term improvements in oral health while providing a quality dental experience for all participating children. Services are provided in a child-friendly manner in the comfort of familiar school settings. This design allows a strong emphasis to be placed on prevention and dental health education, so as to maximize oral health during the critical formative years. On-site school-based dental care also offers the advantages of greater dental access, fewer missed appointments, and less time away from class for many children that are in need of regular dental services.

Who is eligible for the “Miles of Smiles” Dental Program?

Children through the age of 17 who are enrolled in the North Carolina Medicaid or Health Choice Programs qualify for services with the “Miles of Smiles” mobile clinic. The mobile program visits different school throughout the year for 6-8 weeks at a time. While located at each site, eligible children are seen. To participate, parents must sign a permission form and complete the child’s health history. Pre-school children and students from other schools may also be seen through special arrangements with the “Miles of Smiles” program coordinator.
