CHILD HEALTH PROGRAM

What is the Child Health Program?

The Child Health Program includes a variety of services for young and school age children. Assessments and physicals for kindergarten, Headstart and Day Care are available. Primary care services, services for your children when they are sick, are also available.

Blood tests to determine a child’s blood lead level are offered to children in the community who are at the greatest risk for lead poisoning hazards. A simple blood test can determine a child’s blood lead level. Screening is recommended at 12 and 24 months of age. Children up to 6 years of age may also be tested. Follow-up services for children with elevated blood levels may include a home visit with the nurse and an environmental health specialist. The nurse may make referrals for nutritional counseling, developmental testing and medical follow-up. The environmental health specialist will be interested in assessing the home environment for lead hazards.

Health Checkups that include routine physical exams, lab tests, growth measurements, developmental screenings and hearing/vision checks and immunizations are also provided. Children should receive well child check ups at the following ages:

2 Weeks
2 Months
4 Months
6 Months

9-12 Months
15 Months
18 Months
2 Years

Then every year through age 5; then every 3 years for children 6 years and older

Childhood immunizations to prevent diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, meningitis, hepatitis B and chicken pox are provided through the health department. Immunizations are available daily without an appointment. The recommended immunization schedule is available at www.immunizenc.com

If you have a child going to or attending college, it is important that he or she receive the meningococcal vaccine which prevents bacterial meningitis. This is very important if your child will be living in a dorm or a residence hall.

Adults need immunizations too! Shots for the flu, pneumonia, Hepatitis B and tetanus may be available.
