Purpose of the Environmental Health Division
The primary purpose of the Environmental Health Division is to ensure the health of the citizens of Carteret County by safe food handling, proper on-site sewage treatment and disposal, lead abatement to protect small children, clean indoor air and swimming pool sanitation. While serving as an advocate for the private and business sectors, this is accomplished by, but not limited to education, interpreting and surveying potential environmental hazards, and enforcing state and local laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to public health. |
Environmental Health Services include:
- Permitting, inspection, and approval of septic tanks systems
- Compliance inspections of permitted wastewater system
- Permitting, inspection and grading of all regulated food and lodging establishments. Establishments that are regulated include:
- Restaurants
- Motels/hotels
- Food stands
- Child Care centers
- Swimming pools
- Tattoo parlors
- Investigation of food poisoning outbreaks
- Investigations concerning elevated blood lead levels in children
- Investigation of public health nuisance complaints
- Waster sampling and testing
- Food safety classes
The staff of the Environmental Health Division is charged with enforcing North Carolina laws and rules while performing these mandated programs. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources provides technical guidance and delegation of authority.

How can I receive services from Environmental Health Services?
Most services require an application. Applications are taken primarily by visiting the Environmental Health Division but can also be faxed or mailed.
What to bring with you?
You will need to have certain types of information to submit an application or service request depending on the service requested. It is advised that you contact the Environmental Health Division to inquire about what information may be needed prior to visiting the office.
What fees are involved?
Fees vary according to the type of services requested. Fees can be paid by cash, or check. All fees must be paid at the time of the service request.
